Patients:  This phase II study involved twenty seven men with metastatic prostate cancer.  The median age was 68, ranging from 53 to 83 years.  The majority (89%) had metastasis to the bone.

Treatment:  Patients were treated with the chemotherapy drug docetaxel and the biological therapies zoledronic acid and estramustine.

Toxicities:  The most common toxicities were grade 2 to 3 anemia and grade 3 thrombocytopenia, fatigue, alopecia, and hypocalcemia.  Three patients died, two from pulmonary thrombosis following deep vein thrombosis.  Another patient died from liver toxicity and Stevens-Johnson syndrome (a severe skin reaction).  After these deaths, the study was ended.

Results: The median overall survival was 10.2 months.
