Patients: This phase II study involved 70 men with androgen-independent prostate cancer. They ranged in age from 52 to 85 years.

Treatment: Patients were treated with the chemotherapy drug docetaxel alone or in combination with doxercalciferol. Doxercalciferol is a ‘prohormone’ similar to Vitamin D, a nutrient found in foods.

Toxicities: Grade 3 and 4 toxicities included abdominal cramping, diarrhea, dyspnea, edema, hyperglycemia, infection, nail change nausea, febrile neutropenia, pleural effusion, thrombocytopenia, thrombosis/embolism. Each of these were reported in 10 or fewer patients.

Results: The median overall survival was 17.8 months for patients treated with docetaxel and doxercalciferol, and 16.4 months for patients treated with docetaxel alone

Support: This study was supported in part by research funds from Genzyme and Sanofi-Aventis. Sanofi-Aventis markets docetaxel as Taxotere.
