Patients: This phase II study involved 40 women with advanced or metastatic breast cancer. The median age was 57 years, ranging from 36 to 80. The majority (75%) had been previously treated with chemotherapy.

Treatment: Patients were treated with the chemotherapy drugs vinorelbine and capecitabine, and then docetaxel.

Toxicities: The most common toxicities were neutropenia and febrile neutropenia, which occurred in 10% and 7.5% of patients, respectively. Grade 3 and 4 anemia, thrombocytopenia, neutropenia, and febrile neutropenia were reported in 10% of patients or less. Grade 3 and 4 febrile neutropenia and neutropenia were more frequent when patients were being treated with vinorelbine and capecitabine than when they were being treated with docetaxel.

Results: The median overall survival was 35.7 months, ranging from 2 to 47.
