Patients: This phase II study involved 226 patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer. They ranged in age from 26 to 74 years of age.

Treatment: Patients were treated with the chemotherapy drug pemetrexed and given nutritional supplements of folic acid and vitamin B12. Patients were given two different doses of pemetrexed.

Toxicities: One patient died from pneumonitis/interstitial lung disease. Grade 4 neutropenia, lymphopenia, and anemia were reported (each in less than 5% of patients). These toxicities at a grade 3 severity were also reported, as were leukopenia, anorexia, diarrhea, constipation, rash, and pneumonitis.

Results: The median overall survival was 16 months for patient treated with the lower dose of pemetrexed (500mg/m2) and 12.6 months for those treated with the higher dose (1000mg/m2)
