Patients: This phase III study involved 502 women with recurrent ovarian cancer. Of these, 208 women had platinum-resistant cancer. Their average age was 60.5 years, ranging from 28 to 84.

Treatment: Patients were treated with either topotecan alone, topotecan plus etoposide, or topotecan plus gemcitabine. These are all chemotherapy drugs.

Toxicity: Grade 3 and 4 toxicities included anemia, thrombopenia, febrile neutropenia, alopecia, diarrhea, constipation, nausea, vomiting, sensomotory, and stomatitis.

Results: The median overall survival was 17.2 months for patients treated with topotecan alone; 17.8 months for those treated with topotecan and etoposide; and 15.2 months for those treated with topotecan and gemcitabine.
