Patients: This phase II study involved 196 patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer. They had not received any chemotherapy treatment before entering this study. Their median age was 74, ranging from 70 to 89 years.

Treatment: Patients were treated with either gefitinib or vinorelbine, both of which are chemotherapy drugs.

Toxicity: Three deaths occurred that were related to the study drug vinorelbine. These deaths were from pneumonia, septic shock, and neutropenic sepsis. Grade 3 and 4 toxicities in both treatment groups included diarrhea, rash, anorexia, pyrexia, and neutropenia. The majority of toxicities were grade 1 or 2 in severity.

Results: The median overall survival was 8.0 months for patients treated with vinorelbine and 5.9 months for those treated with gefitinib.

Support: This study was supported by research funds from AstraZeneca, which markets gefitinib as Iressa.
