Description:
Patients: This phase 1/2 study involved 97 patients with recently diagnosed glioblastoma. The median age was 57, ranging from 31 to 84 years old. About half (42) of the patients were women.

Treatment: Patients were treated with the biological therapy erlotinib, and radiation therapy with temozolomide.

Toxicity: Two patients died, after they developed pneumonia. The most common toxicities were rash, fatigue, thrombocytopenia, diarrhea, leucopenia, and neutropenia. Grade 4 toxicities were rash, fatigue, thrombocytopenia, leucopenia, and neutropenia and each occurred in less than 10% of patients.

Results: The median overall survival was 15.3 months.

Support: One of the authors of the study has received research funds from Genentech, which markets erlotinib as Tarceva.
