Description:
Patients: This phase 2 study involved 19 patients with androgen-independent prostate cancer. Their median age was 70, ranging from 52 to 83 years of age.

Treatment: These patients were treated with the chemotherapy drug mitoxantrone, calcitriol (a type of vitamin D), and prednisone (a corticosteroid or biological therapy).

Toxicity: Grade 3 toxicities (neutropenia/leucopenia, fatigue, and temporary loss of consciousness) occurred in one patient each. One grade 4 toxicity, pulmonary embolism, was also reported.

Results: The median overall survival was 16 months (ranging from 6 to 26 months).
