Description:
Patients: This phase 3 study involved 203 patients with inoperable stage III non-small cell lung cancer. Women made up 34% of the patients. The median age was 63 years.

Treatment: Patients received radiation therapy, cisplatin, and etoposide. After this treatment, some (about half) of the patients also received docetaxel while the rest were just observed.

Toxicity: In the group receiving docetaxel, 5.5% of patients died from a cause related to the drug. Grade 3 and 4 febrile neutropenia and pneumonitis were also reported in this group, in 10.9 and 9.6% of patients, respectively. In the group that did not receive docetaxel, 1.4% of patients had grade 3 or 4 pneumonitis.

Results: The median overall survival for all patients was 21.7 months. For patients treated with docetaxel the median overall survival was 21.2 months and for those who didnít get docetaxel it was 23.2 months.

Support: This study was supported with research funds from Sanofi-aventis, which markets docetaxel as Taxotere.
