Patients: This phase 3 study involved 130 patients with non-small cell lung cancer who had previously been treated with a platinum-based chemotherapy. They ranged in age from 34 to 75 years, and most (about two-thirds) were men.

Treatment: Patients were treated with the chemotherapy drugs docetaxel plus gemcitabine or docetaxel alone.

Toxicity: Three patients being treated with docetaxel and gemcitabine died from interstitial lung disease. Grade 3 and 4 neutropenia was reported in more than 80% of patients in each treatment group. Other grade 3 and 4 toxicities were anemia, leucopenia, alopecia and febrile neutropenia. This study was stopped due to the deaths that occurred.

Results: The median overall survival was 10.3 months for patients treated with docetaxel and gemcitabine and 10.1 months for those treated with docetaxel alone.
