Patients: This study involved twenty-eight patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma. Eighteen of the patients were men. These patients ranged in age from 30 to 85 years old, and the average age was 62.8 years

Treatment: Patients were treated with TAC-101, which is a biological therapy that is chemically similar to vitamin A.

Toxicity: Five patients experienced one or more grade 3 and 4 toxicities; increased serum AST (liver enzyme) levels, dermatitis, fatigue, pancreatitis, pruritis, deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. Other toxicities including rigors, constipation, leucopenia, arthritis, muscle pain, and headache were reported.

Results: The median overall survival was 19.2 months.
