Patients: This phase 2 study involved 32 patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer. The median age was 66.5, ranging from 39 to 80 years of age. There were 19 men and 13 women in this study.

Treatment: Patients were treated with the biological therapy axitinib. Axitinib is given orally, and it inhibits VEGF receptors.

Toxicity: Grade 3 and 4 toxicities included fatigue, diarrhea, high blood pressure, vomiting, hyponatremia (abnormal sodium levels), glossodynia (a burning or tingling sensation inside the mouth), headache, pain, peripheral neuropathy and kidney failure.

Results: The median overall survival was 14.8 months.
