Patients: This phase 3 study involved 272 patients with advanced liver cancer. Most of the patients (75%) were men. The median age was 70 years, ranging from 39 to 88.

Treatment: Patients were treated with either the biological therapy octreotide or placebo. Placebo is a non-active substance that looks like the study drug.

Toxicity: About 25% of patients (treated with either octreotide or the placebo) reported a grade 3 or 4 toxicity, including diarrhea, nausea, heartburn, high blood sugar levels, injection site reaction. The most common toxicity (of any severity) was diarrhea, reported in 40% of patients receiving octreotide and 26% of those receiving placebo. One patient treated with octreotide died from a sudden stroke.

Results: The median overall survival was 6.53 months for patients treated with octreotide and 7.03 months for those receiving the placebo.

Support: This study was supported by funds from Novartis, which developed octreotide.
