Many cancer patients are given diagnostic scans such as MRI's with contrast. Recently, the FDA has demanded that the manufacturers of gadolinium-based contrast agents place a black box warning on the labels because of severe side effects associated with gadolinium exposure. The most serious is nephrogenic systemic fibrosis or nephrogenic fibrosing dermopathy (NSF or NFD). This disease affects connective tissues throughout the body. Patients afflicted with NSF or NFD may experience a hardening of the skin which could lead to joint immobility. NSF or NFD also affects thigh muscles, lower abdomen, diaphragm and lung vessels. Due to the hardening of the skin and the impact on the lungs and diaphragm, breathing can be restricted in some patients causing shortness of breath and possibly death. Currently, there is no effective treatment for NSF or NFD.
If you have been given a contrast agent ("dye") during a MRI or MRA and have been diagnosed with NSF or NFD or have other serious side effects you may have legal rights.
