Description:

Patients:
This phase 3 trial involved women with newly diagnosed ovarian cancer who had not received previous chemotherapy. Patients were divided into two treatment groups. Group 1 consisted of 409 patients with a median age of 57 years and group 2 had 410 patients with a median age of 57 years.

Treatment:
Patients in group 1 were given a combination of four chemotherapy agents: cisplatin, topotecan, paclitaxel, and carboplatin.

Patients in group 2 were given the chemotherapy agents paclitaxel and carboplatin.

Toxicities:
Two deaths due to sepsis (systemic inflammation) were reported for group 1. Also reported was grade 4 granulocytopenia (85% of patients).

Two deaths due to sepsis were also reported for group 2. Neurosensory effects were also reported in 84% of patients.

Results:
The median overall survival in group 1 was 42.3 months.

For group 2, the median overall survival was 42.1 months.
