Description:

Patients: This phase II study involved 22 patients with metastatic renal cancer. Fifteen were men, and seven were women. Metastatic sites include lung, lymph nodes, liver, and bone. The median age was 59 years.

Treatment: The treatment consisted of one chemotherapeutic agent (thalidomide) and one immunotherapeutic/biologic agent: interleukin-2. In addition, radiotherapy was given to 13 patients.

Toxicity: Grade 3-4 toxicities include deep vein thrombosis and sensory neuropathy.

Results: The overall median survival was not reported. The authors concluded, "The combination of low dose IL-2, thalidomide and radiotherapy is feasible, but relatively toxic and does not lead to higher responses at non-irradiated sites."
