Description:

Patients: This phase I study involved 21 patients with various metastatic solid tissue cancers. Twelve patients were men, and nine were women. The median age was 61. Five patients had prostate cancer, four had lung cancer, three had breast cancer, three had ovarian cancer, two had colorectal, and two had pancreatic cancer.

Treatment: The treatment involved one biologic agent: pertuzumab, a recombinant human monoclonal antibody.

Toxicity: One patient suffered a myocardial infarction resulting in left ventricular failure (grade 4). This event was considered possibly related to treatment. In addition, grade 3-4 toxicities included abdominal pain and dyspnea.

Results: Overall survival was not reported in this study. The authors concluded, "these preliminary data suggest that inhibition of HER dimerization may be a novel, potentially effective anticancer strategy."
