Description:

Patients: This study involved 162 patients with intracranial glioblastoma multiforme or gliosarcomas. They were from 20 different cancer treatment centers. Fifty-four of the patients were women and 108 were men.

Treatment: Seventy-nine people received a placebo, and 83 received the biological therapy - marimastat. Marimastat is an inhibitor of the matrix metalloproteases family of enzymes. All patients had previously been treated with surgery and radiotherapy.

Toxicity: Musculoskeletal toxicity including aches, pains (sometimes restricting movement), and inflammation was the only reported toxicity.

Results: The median survival time was 37.9 weeks for the group receiving placebo and 42.9 weeks for those receiving marimastat.

Support: The authors state that none of them ‘currently have a financial interest in marimastat’. One author is employed by Origin Pharmaceuticals Ltd.
