Description:

Patients: This phase III study involved 280 women ranging in age from 24.4 to 85.8 years old. These patients had stage III or IV epithelial ovarian cancer, fallopian tube, or primary peritoneal cancer.

Treatment: Patients were treated with the chemotherapy drugs paclitaxel and cisplatin. Half the patients received an infusion of paclitaxel for 24 hours and the other half received it for 96 hours.

Toxicity: Grade 4 granulocytopenia was more common in patients receiving paclitaxel for the shorter (24 hour) time, occurring in 79% of patients compared to 54% of patients in the other group. Other grade 3 and 4 toxicities included leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, anemia, and gastrointestinal.

Results: The median overall survival was 2.49 years for patients treated with cisplatin and a 24-hour infusion of paclitaxel, and 2.54 years for patients treated with cisplatin and a 96-hour infusion of paclitaxel.
