Description:

Patients:
This phase 3 study involved metastatic colorectal adenocarcinoma patients who were divided into two separate treatment groups. Group A consisted of 585 patients with an average age of 59.1 years; 62.9% were male. Group B had 583 patients with an average age of 59.6 years; 60.4% were male.

Treatment:
Patients in group A were treated with the chemotherapy agents fluorouracil, leucovorin, and oxaliplatin (FOLFOX4) in addition to the biologic therapy agent PTK/ZK (also known as vatalanib), which is an angiogenesis inhibitor that inhibits blood supply to the tumor.
Patients in group B were treated with the chemotherapy drugs fluorouracil, leucovorin, and oxaliplatin only.

Toxicities:
Treatment-related deaths due to unspecified causes were reported for group A. Grade 3-4 neutropenia, high blood pressure, and diarrhea were also reported.

Treatment-related deaths due to unspecified causes were reported for group B. Grade 3-4 neutropenia, vomiting, and diarrhea were also reported.

Results:
The median overall survival rates for groups A and B were 21.4 and 20.5 months, respectively.
