Description:

Patients: This Phase II study involved 63 patients with metatstatic colorectal cancer with unresectable liver metastases. Thirty-seven patients had prior chemotherapy, and their data are analyzed separately (Group A) from twenty-six patients who have not received prior treatment (Group B). The median age of the entire group was 65 years. In Group A, there were twenty-nine men and eight women. The median age was 64. In Group B, there were fourteen men and twelve women. The median age was 66.

Treatment: The treatment consisted of three chemotherapy drugs: floxuridine, dexamethasone, and mitomycin C. The drugs were administered by an implanted hepatic artery infusion pump.

Toxicity: Grade 3-4 toxicities included increased liver enzymes, thrombocytopenia, and leukopenia.

Results: The median overall survival for all patients was 21 months (20 months for group A and 26 for group B). The authors concluded, "Biliary toxicity was higher than expected; therefore,alternatives to high dose Mit-C should be investigated."
