Description:

Patients:
This phase III study involved women with locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer who were divided into two separate treatment groups. Group A consisted of 170 patients with a median age of 58 years. Group B had 167 patients with a median age of 58 years.

Treatment:
Patients in group A were treated with the chemotherapy agents gemcitabine and docetaxel. Patients in group B were treated with docetaxel alone.

Toxicities:
The maximum toxicities reported in group A were of grade 4 and included neutropenia (52.7% of patients), and infection. Grade 3 fatigue, nausea/vomiting, and nerve disorders were also reported.

There was one treatment-related death due to infection in group B. In addition, 53.7% of patients reported grade 4 neutropenia. Grade 3 fatigue and nerve disorders were also reported.

Results:
The median overall survival rates for groups A and B were 19.7 and 17.9 months, respectively.
