Description:

Patients: This phase III study involved 368 women with estrogen- or progesterone-receptor positive locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer.

Treatment: Patients were treated with either tamoxifen or arzoxifene, both of which are chemotherapy drugs.

Toxicity: Grade 3 and 4 toxicities were hot flashes and myalgia, vomiting, dyspnea, irregular menses, and thrombosis/embolism. Fourteen deaths occurred during the study, but they were not attributed to the study treatment.

Results: The median overall survival was 17.1 months for the women receiving tamoxifen. Survival calculation was not available for women treated with arzoxifene. When the researchers determined that tamoxifen was a better treatment, the study was stopped.

Support: Eli Lilly and Co, which developed arzoxifene, provided research funds.
