Description:

Patients:
This phase 2 study involved advanced non-squamous non–small-cell lung cancer patients who were divided into two separate treatment groups. Group A had 55 patients with a median age of 62 years and 62% male. Group B had 57 patients with a median age of 59 years and 65% male.

Treatment:
Patients in group A were treated with the biologic axitinib (inhibitor of the VEGF receptor protein) and the chemotherapy agents pemetrexed and cisplatin.

Patients received chemotherapy with pemetrexed and cisplatin.

Toxicities:
The most severe toxicities in group A were of grade 4 and included grade 3-4 nausea, hypertension, and neutropenia.

The most severe toxicities in group B were of grade 4 and included grade 3-4 fatigue and anemia.

Results:
The median overall survival rates for groups A and B were 17.0 and 15.9 months, respectively.
