Description:

Patients:
This phase III study involved non–small-cell lung cancer patients who were divided into two separate treatment groups. Group A consisted of 275 patients with a median age of 63 years and 62% male. Group B had 271 patients with a median age of 63 years and 60% male.

Treatment:
Patients in group A were treated with radiation and the chemotherapy drugs paclitaxel and carboplatin.
Group B was treated with radiation, paclitaxel, carboplatin, and the biologic therapy agent thalidomide.

Toxicities:
Treatment–related deaths were reported in group A due to thromboembolism (blood clot) and infection.

In group B, treatment-related deaths due to thromboembolism (blood clot), pneumonia, and cardiac ischemia (reduced blood flow).

Results:
The median overall survival rate for groups A and B was 15.3 and 16.0 months, respectively.
