Description:

Patients: This Phase II study involved 92 patients with previously untreated advanced colorectal cancer. Forty-six patients were randomized to group A (arm A) and forty-six patients were randomized to group B (arm B).

Treatment: Patients in group A received oxaliplatin (eloxatin) plus irinotecan (camptosar). Patients in group B received raltitrexed. Upon development of progressive disease (i.e. growth of tumor), second-line treatment with the opposite arm was administered.

Toxicity: Grade 3-4 toxicities in group A included: leucopenia, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, anemia, infection, nausea/emesis, diarrhea, alopecia, and peripheral neuropathy.

Results: With a median follow-up of 15 months, the median overall survival (measured from the date of randomization) was 16.0 months for patients in group A.
