Description:

Patients: This Phase III study involved 462 women with metastatic breast cancer. The patients were randomly divided into two groups. In Group A, there were 230 patients mean age 52).

Treatment: The treatment for Group A consisted of one chemotherapeutic agent: capecitabine.

Toxicity: In Group A, Grade 3-4 toxicities included diarrhea, stomatitis, hand-foot syndrome, asthenia, and leukopenia.

Results: The median overall survival for Group A was 14.5 months.

Support: Genentech financially supported this study, and several authors were employed by and have financial interests in Genentech. Genentech manufactures and markets bevacizumab (a drug that was administered to patients in Group B).
