Description:

Patients: This Phase III trial involved a total of 352 patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer. There were 255 men and 97 women and the ages ranged from 29 to 77 (the median age was 57). 149 patients had squamous cell carcinoma, 147 had adenocarcinoma, 10 had large cell, and 46 were classified as other. 260 patients had Stage IV and 92 patients had Stage IIIB.

Treatment: All patients were administered chemotherapy (cisplatin and gemcitabine). Then patients were divided into two groups – Group A of 206 patients received additional chemotherapy (maintenance gemcitabine); Group B of 68 patients received supportive care (no chemo).

Toxicity: Grade 4 toxicities included hematologic, hemorrhage, and pulmonary.

Results: The median overall survival for Group A was 13 months. The median survival for Group B was 11 months.
