Description:

Patients:
This phase II trial involved 53 patients with metastatic melanoma. Of these, 62.3% were male and the median age was 55 years old (range 30-84).

Treatments:
Patients in this study were administered the chemotherapy agents carboplatin and paclitaxel, as well as a biologic therapy drug called bevacizumab, which is an antibody that blocks a protein involved in cancer cell growth.

Toxicity:
During this study, one patient died from an undiagnosed brain metastases. It was described as "one case of grade 5 central nervous system
hemorrhage." The most common severe toxicities were neutropenia, leucopenia, and anemia. The percentages that experienced Grade 3 or higher level of these toxicities are 53%, 38%, and 8%, respectively.

Results:
The median overall survival in this study was 12 months.
