Description:

Patients: This phase II study involved 22 patients with advanced colorectal cancer. The median age was 64, ranging from 27 to 75 years. Fifteen were men and seven were women.

Treatment: These patients were treated with raltitrexed and mitomycin-C.

Toxicity: The study was closed early because of 3 toxic deaths. The most common grade 3 and 4 toxicities were lethargy, nausea/vomiting, diarrhea, neutropenia, anemia, and renal impairment. According to the authors, the “deaths resulted from a combination of prolonged diarrhea, neutropenic sepsis, and renal failure”.

Results: The median overall survival time was 11.6 months, and the median time to progression was 3.9 months. At the time the article was written, 20 of the 22 patients developed progressive disease and died. The two living patients have been alive for 47.7 and 45.2 months.
