Description:

Patients: This Phase II study involved 55 patients with newly diagnosed glioblastoma multiforme.

Treatment: Treatment consisted of the drug suramin and radiotherapy.

Toxicity: One patient died of central nervous system ischemia. Another patient died of progressive cerebral edema during radiation. Both deaths are “possibly related to suramin.” Grade 4 toxicities included fatigue, cerebral edema, neuropathy, pancreatitis, pulmonary, renal, central nervous system hemorrhage, leucopenia, and electrolyte imbalance.

Results: Median survival was 11.6 months.
