Description:

Patients: This phase II study involved 34 patients with advanced liver cancer. Of these, 13 had underlying alcoholic liver disease and 21 did not. The median age of these patients was 59 years. Twenty-eight were men and 6 were women.

Treatment: All patients received the chemotherapy drugs gemcitabine and oxaliplatin.

Toxicity: Grade 4 neutropenia occurred in 1 patient. Grade 3 toxicities were neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, anemia, and neurotoxicity. Grade 1 and 2 toxicities were observed in 12% and 45% of patients, respectively.

Results: Thirty-two patients were assessed for efficacy (1 patient died of sepsis and another was lost to follow-up). The median overall survival was 11.5 months and the median progression free survival was 6.3 months.
