Description:

Patients:
This phase 3 study involved untreated advanced non-squamous non- small-cell lung cancer patients who were divided into two separate treatment groups. Group A consisted of 315 patients with a median age of 61; 68% were male. Group B had 318 patients with a median age of 60 years; 66% were male.

Treatment:
Patients in group A received biologic therapy with necitumumab (a monoclonal antibody against EGFR that interferes with cancer cell growth) and chemotherapy with pemetrexed and cisplatin.

Patients in group B received chemotherapy with pemetrexed and cisplatin.

Toxicities:
There were 15 treatment-related deaths reported in group A due to stroke, heart attack, and pulmonary embolism. Grade 4 neutropenia and grade 3 skin reactions were also reported.

There were 9 treatment-related deaths reported in group B due to stroke, heart attack, and pulmonary embolism. Grade 4 neutropenia and grade 3 fatigue were also reported.

Results:
The median overall survival for group A and B was 11.3 and 11.5 months, respectively.
