Description:

Patients:
This phase 2 study involved 22 metastatic breast cancer patients who had received prior taxane-based chemotherapy. The median patient age was 56 years.

Treatment:
Patients were treated with the chemotherapy agent paclitaxel and the biologic therapy agent called suramin, which is a growth factor inhibitor.

Toxicities:
There was one death attributed to progressive disease and Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome. Grade 4 leukopenia, neutropenia, and shortness of breath were also reported.

Results:
The median overall survival was 11.2 months.
