Description:

Patients: This multicenter Phase II trial involved 50 patients with hormone refractory prostate cancer. The median age was 67.5. The median PSA was 306.81 (ranged from .2 – 4200). Metastatic disease sites included bone, soft tissue, and lymph nodes.

Treatment: The treatment consisted of the drug Suramin and hydrocortisone.

Toxicity: Infection was documented in 15 patients, which was treated uneventfully except for 1 toxic death. In addition, grade 3-4 toxicities included hematologic, neurologic, constipation, renal (creatinine), hepatic (transaminitis), fatigue, and skin rash.

Results: The median overall survival was 11 months.
