Description:

Patients: This phase 2 study involved patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer. They ranged in age from 36 to 78 years of age. There were two groups of patients; one group had 39 people in it, and they had not been treated with chemotherapy before. The other group had 15 patients, who had been treated with chemotherapy before and their cancer was resistant to it.

Treatment: Patients in both groups were treated with suramin, which is a biological therapy, and the chemotherapy drugs paclitaxel and carboplatin.

Toxicity: Two patients died unexpectedly, but these deaths were not attributed to the study drugs. Grade 4 neutropenia occurred in 53% of patients. Two patients experienced grade 4 fatigue/asthenia and 3 patients experienced grade 4 anemia. Grade 3 toxicities included neutropenia, anemia, thrombocytopenia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, constipation, and peripheral neuropathy.

Results: The median overall survival was 10.4 months for patients that hadn’t been treated with chemotherapy before, and 4.3 months (132 days) for the group that had been previously been treated with chemotherapy.
