Description:

Patients:
This phase 3 study involved metastatic colorectal cancer patients, previously treated with bevacizumab and chemotherapy, who were divided into two separate treatment groups. There were 409 patients with a median age of 63 years in group A; 65% were male. Group B had 411 patients with a median age of 63 years and 63% male.

Treatment:
Patients in group A were treated with the biologic therapy agent bevacizumab and chemotherapy with either irinotecan or oxaliplatin.

Patients in group B were given chemotherapy only, with either irinotecan or oxaliplatin.

Toxicities:
Treatment-related deaths (4) due to intestinal bleeding, stroke, sudden death, and neutropenia were reported in group A. Grade 3-4 diarrhea, weakness, and nausea/vomiting were also reported.

Treatment-related deaths (3) due to intestinal perforation, general physical health deterioration, and kidney failure were reported in group B. Grade 3-4 neutropenia, diarrhea, and weakness were also reported.

Results:
The median overall survival for groups A and B was 11.2 and 9.8 months, respectively.
