Description:

Patients: This phase II study involved 40 patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer. These patients had previously been treated with a platinum-based chemotherapy such as cisplatin and then had a relapse or recurrence. The median age was 59 years, ranging from 33 to 75.

Treatment: All patients were treated with the chemotherapy drugs paclitaxel and gemcitabine.

Toxicity: Grade 3 leukopenia and neutropenia occurred in 45% and 60% of patients, respectively. Grade 3 anemia and thrombocytopenia were also reported. Other grade 3 events were pneumonitis, diarrhea, and rash. These toxicities occurred in one patient each.

Results: The median overall survival was 41.7 weeks (9.6 months), and the median time to disease progression was 19 weeks.
