Description:

Patients: This study involved 322 patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer. The majority of patients were male smokers, and they ranged in age from 33 to 78 years old.

Treatment: Patients were treated with either docetaxel or docetaxel and gemcitabine. Both are chemotherapy drugs.

Toxicity: Two patients died, one from sepsis and another from anaphylactic shock. Grade 3/4 neutropenia occurred in almost half of patients in each group, and anemia occurred in 24.8% of patients treated with gemcitabine and docetaxel, and in 12.3% of those treated with docetaxel alone. Other grade 3/4 toxicities were neurotoxicity, hypersensitivity, asthenia, edema, and nail changes.

Results: The median overall survival was 9.4 months for patients treated with docetaxel and gemcitabine and 8.3 months for those treated with docetaxel only.
