Description:

Patients:
This phase 2 study involved advanced hepatocellular carcinoma patients who were divided into two separate treatment groups. Group A had 54 patients with a median age of 62.5 years and 83.3% male. Group B consisted of 55 patients with a median age of 66 years and 80.0% male.

Treatment:
Patients in group A received biologic therapy with tigatuzumab (a monoclonal antibody that interacts with the DR5 protein to induce cancer cell death) and sorafenib.

Patients in group B received biologic therapy with sorafenib alone.

Toxicities:
The most severe toxicities in group A were of grade 5 and included death due to disease progression. Grade 3 or higher neutropenia and diarrhea were also reported.

The most severe toxicities in group B were of grade 5 and included death due to disease progression. Grade 3 or higher fatigue and diarrhea were also reported.

Results:
The median overall survival times for groups A and B were 12.1 and 8.2 months, respectively.
