Description:

Patients:
This phase II study involved 149 elderly patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (a type of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma). The median patient age was 83 years (range of 80-95) and 34% were male.

Treatment:
Patients were treated with the biologic therapy agent rituximab (a monoclonal antibody that directs the immune system to attack cancerous B-cells), the chemotherapy agents cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, and vincristine, and the hormone prednisone.

Toxicities:
There were 12 treatment-related deaths reported. Grade 3-4 thrombocytopenia, neutropenia, and anemia were also reported.

Results:
The median overall survival was 29 months.
