Description:

Patients: This Phase III study involved 259 women with metastatic breast cancer. The patients were randomly placed into two groups: Group A had 124 patients (median age 53). Metastatic sites included liver, lung, bone, and lymph node. None of the patients had received anthracyclines prior to treatment.

Treatment: For Group A, the treatment involved three chemotherapeutic agents: gemcitabine, epirubicin, paclitaxel.

Toxicity: In Group A, grade 3-4 toxicities included: neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, anemia, nausea/vomiting, mucositis, allergy, neurosensory toxicity, hepatic toxicity, diarrhea, cardiovascular toxicity, and skin rashes.

Results: The median overall survival was 29.5 months for Group A.

Bristol-Myers Squibb manufactures and markets cyclophosphamide and paclitaxel. Pharmacia Upjohn manufactures and markets epirubicin. Pharmacia Upjohn distributes fluorouracil.
