Description:

Patients:
This phase II study involved 17 patients with stage III non-small cell lung cancer. Patients had not received previous treatment. The median patient age was 58 years, and 13 of the patients were male.

Treatment:
Patients received radiation therapy in combination with the chemotherapy agents paclitaxel and carboplatin and the biologic therapy agent celecoxib (brand name: Celebrex), which is a COX-2 inhibitor that inhibits tumor cell growth.

Toxicities:
There were two deaths (grade 5 toxicity) reported in this study due to respiratory failure and pulmonary embolism. Other toxicities of grade 3 and 4 included neutropenia, hyperglycemia, and pneumonia.

Results:
The median overall survival in this study was 6.7 months. Median progression-free survival was 4.5 months.
