Description:

Patients: This Phase II study involved 25 patients with advanced (stage IIIB or IV) non-small cell lung cancer. All but three patients had received prior chemotherapy.

Treatment: The treatment consisted of a new antitubulin drug called Cryptophycin 52.

Toxicity: One patient died of postobstructive pneumonia and sepsis shortly after receiving the first dose of therapy. Apparently, the authors did not attribute this death to the study drug. Grade 4 toxicities included dehydration and constipation. Other toxicities (grade 3 or less) included hematologic, neuropathy, pain, asthenia/malaise, anorexia, and nausea/vomiting.

Results: There were no responses. Median survival was 4.1 months.

Support: The study was supported by Eli Lilly Oncology. Two of the study authors have received honoraria, research support and have served as consultants for Eli Lilly. In addition, a third author is an employee of Eli Lilly.
