Description:

Patients: This Phase II trial involved 14 patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma, 7 men and 7 women. The median age was 55 and 8 had undergone prior nephrectomy.

Treatment: The treatment consisted of the administration of arsenic trioxide (Trisenox).

Toxicity: One patient died after the first cycle of arsenic trioxide. Cause of death was unknown and “felt unlikely due to arsenic trioxide.” Grade 3 toxicities included abdominal pain/cramping, and anemia. Other toxicities included renal insufficiency, diarrhea, dyspnea, rash, elevation in liver function tests, and hematologic toxicity.

Results: There were no complete or partial responses.
