Description:

Patients: This Phase I-II study involved 50 patients with locally advanced rectal cancer. Forty-five patients had T3 tumors and four had T4 tumors. Nodal involvement was documented in 26 patients.

Treatment: The treatment consisted of preoperative hyperfractionated radiotherapy followed by surgery. (17 patients also received chemotherapy.)

Toxicity: In respect to the radiotherapy, severe acute toxicity was limited to grade 1-3 skin reactions, diarrhea (grades 1-2), urogenital toxicities (grade 1-2), tenesmus (grade 1), fatigue (grade 1-2). In addition, there were late complications (grade 3-4) including: rectovaginal fistula, chronic perineal fistula, and bilateral ureteral stenoses. Five male patients reported marked erectile dysfunction.

Results: At a median follow-up of 32 months from the start of radiotherapy for the surviving patients, 8 patients had died. The 3-year disease-free survival rate was 74.6%
