Description:

Patients:
This study involved advanced hepatocellular carcinoma patients who were divided into two separate treatment groups. Group A consisted of 45 patients with an average age of 51 years; 41 were male. Group B had 45 patients with an average age of 49 years; 41 were male.

Treatment:
Patients in group A received transarterial chemoembolization (chemotherapy) with oxaliplatin and/or fluorouracil and epirubicin. Patients in this group also received biologic therapy with sorafenib.

Patients in group B received transarterial chemoembolization (chemotherapy) with oxaliplatin and/or fluorouracil and epirubicin.

Toxicities:
The most severe toxicities in group A were of grade 3 and included hand-foot skin reaction and high blood pressure.

The most severe toxicities in group B were of grade 3 but were not specified.


Results:
The median overall survival in groups A and B was 27 and 17 months, respectively.
