Description:

Patients: This Phase II study involved 42 patients with colorectal cancer with unresectable liver metastases. Twenty-four patients were men and eighteen were women. Eight patients had chemotherapy, and three had radiation therapy prior to the study. The median age was 63 years.

Treatment: The treatment consisted of two chemotherapeutic agents - fluorouracil and oxaliplatin, and a synthetic vitamin - leucovorin (folate), . The resectability of the metastases was then assessed through surgery.

Toxicity: Grade 3-4 toxicities included diarrhea, leukopenia, nausea, vomiting, and neutropenia.

Results: The median overall survival was 26 months. Seventeen patients did not respond to chemotherapy. Of the 25 patients who responded to chemotherapy, fifteen had metastases that could be surgically removed (14 complete, 1 partial). However, recurrence was observed in 11 patients after surgery (median time 19 months).

Support: The authors disclosed potential conflicts of interest with Sanofi and Pfizer. Sanofi manufactures and/or markets oxaliplatin (Eloxatin).
