Description:

Patients: This study involved 64 patients with glioblastoma multiforme. Most patients had undergone previous surgery. Patients were divided into two groups: Group 1 contained 33 patients; Group 2 contained 31 patients.

Treatment: Patients in Group 1 were administered external beam radiotherapy. Patients in Group 2 were administered external beam radiotherapy plus a gamma knife-stereotactic radiosurgery boost. (Ten patients in Group 1 were also eventually administered the gamma knife-stereotactic radiosurgery boost.)

Toxicity: Two of the patients in Group 2 developed radiation necrosis.

Results: Median overall survival for patients in group 1 was 13 months. Median overall survival for group 2 was 25 months. Median overall survival for all patients was 16 months. Comments by other physicians suggest that these results may be partially due to selection bias or other confounding variables.
