Description:

Patients: This phase I/II study involved 53 women with metastatic or locally advanced breast cancer. The median age of these women was 59, ranging from 32 to 79 years of age. The majority (85%) were postmenopausal.

Treatment: Patients were treated with the chemotherapy drugs non-pegylated liposomal doxorubicin and gemcitabine.

Toxicity: Grade 4 toxicities included leucopenia, neutropenia, anemia and febrile neutropenia. The most common grade 4 toxicity was neutropenia, reported in 55% of patients. There was also one report each of grade 4 asthenia, nausea, vomiting, alopecia, and diarrhea.

Results: The median overall survival was 25.4 months.
